The complete guide to honeymooning on the Amalfi Coast by train

Picture this. You and your partner board a high-speed train in Venice, watching the Italian countryside blur past your window. Two hours later you are in Florence, checking into a hotel overlooking the Arno. A few days after that, you are winding along cliffside roads on the Amalfi Coast, limoncello in hand, the Mediterranean stretching out below you.

This is what a honeymoon by train in Italy looks like. And it is one of the most romantic ways to see the country.

Why train travel is the most romantic way to see Italy

Italy's high-speed rail network connects most major cities in under four hours. Frecciarossa and Italo trains run frequently, offer multiple comfort classes, and arrive in city centres rather than airports on the outskirts. The result is a style of travel that eliminates the stress of car rental, cliffside driving, and parking, and replaces it with something that actually feels like part of the experience.

First class on Frecciarossa includes a welcome drink, snack service, and seats wide enough to sit next to your partner rather than across from them. It is a date in motion.

The route

Venice to Florence: 2 hours on Frecciarossa. The Venetian lagoon gives way to the flat Po Valley, then the rolling hills of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. Arrive at Santa Maria Novella station in the centre of Florence, walking distance from the Duomo.

Florence to Naples or Salerno: 3 to 4 hours through the heart of Italy. The views shift from Tuscan countryside to the outskirts of Rome and then south into Campania. Naples is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, while Salerno is the more direct transfer point.

Salerno to Vietri sul Mare: 8 minutes on a regional train. Vietri sul Mare is the eastern gateway to the Amalfi Coast and the only town on the coast with a train station.

From Vietri sul Mare, the SITA bus runs along the coast road through Maiori, Minori, Amalfi, and eventually Positano. The bus ride itself is an experience: the road clings to the cliffside with the sea far below. Grab a seat on the right side heading west for the best views.

The off-season advantage

Visiting the Amalfi Coast in September through November or March through May changes the entire character of the trip. Hotel rates drop 30 to 50 percent. The Path of the Gods trail is walkable without crowds. Restaurants have tables available without reservations made weeks in advance. The towns feel like they belong to you rather than to the masses.

September is the sweet spot for most couples. Temperatures average 25 degrees Celsius. The sea is at its warmest. The summer rush has faded but everything is still fully operational.

Where to stay

Positano for the iconic cliffside views and the pastel houses cascading to the sea. Ravello for quiet luxury, the gardens of Villa Cimbrone, and the Terrace of Infinity overlooking the coast. Amalfi town for a central base with easy ferry and bus access to other towns. Minori for an under-the-radar local feel with excellent bakeries and a Roman villa archaeological site.

What to do

Walk the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) between Agerola and Positano: a clifftop trail with some of the most spectacular views in Europe, ending in Positano for a swim and a meal. Visit the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone in Ravello: one of the most romantic viewpoints in Italy, free with garden entry. Take a private boat tour along the coast or to Capri, the splurge activity that almost every couple says was worth it. Take a cooking class in Ravello or Minori where you make fresh pasta and lemon-based desserts from local ingredients.

Budget overview

Five nights off-season mid-range: $3,500 to $5,500 for two. Boutique hotel in Positano or Amalfi town, a mix of fine dining and casual meals, the Path of the Gods hike, a ferry to Capri, and a cooking class.

Seven nights peak-season luxury: $8,000 to $15,000 for two. Luxury hotel in Ravello or Positano, private boat tour, fine dining most evenings, cooking class, and a spa day.

The Amalfi Coast does not have to break the bank. It takes smart timing and the right guidance. A private consultation can help you find the perfect window.

Investment in honeymoon planning begins at $700.
