Origins Lodge Costa Rica: the elopement destination you need to know about
Perched between two volcanoes in Costa Rica's northern highlands, Origins Lodge is the kind of place where you wake up to howler monkeys, soak in a fire-heated plunge pool, and feel like you have escaped to another world. It is also one of the most compelling elopement destinations in the western hemisphere.
The property
Origins Luxury Lodges actually comprises two distinct properties on adjacent estates in the Bijagua region of Alajuela, between the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes.
Origins Floral Lodge is the original property: 6 one-bedroom lodges and 1 three-bedroom lodge, designed primarily for couples and honeymooners. The lodges are individual structures nestled into the rainforest, each with a private plunge pool heated by a wood-burning stove, an outdoor stone shower, and panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Lake Nicaragua. The staff-to-guest ratio is nearly 3 to 1.
Origins Astral Lodge opened in January 2026. It features 7 multi-bedroom villas (two to four bedrooms each) with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rainforest, private plunge pools, and fully stocked kitchens. The Astral property is designed for families, groups, and small celebrations, making it ideal for elopements with a handful of guests. The celestial theme, inspired by the lodge's elevated position between two volcanoes, runs through the design: sky-inspired elements, terracotta walls, and green accents that mirror the surrounding canopy.
Guests can walk between the two properties to share restaurants, yoga classes, and spa facilities.
Why it works for elopements
The intimacy of the setting is the primary draw. On any given night, you might be one of only a few couples on the entire Floral property. The Astral villas can accommodate a small guest list while maintaining the feeling of seclusion.
The property offers on-site destination wedding and elopement packages, which can include the ceremony, styling, photography, and a celebratory dinner in a private setting. Combined with Costa Rica's simple legal marriage process (valid passports and an officiant, no waiting period), the logistics are straightforward.
The experience
The daily experience at Origins is designed to immerse you in the natural setting without sacrificing comfort.
Private horseback rides take you to local farms where you can see how coffee and cacao are produced. Nature night walks through the 128-acre grounds reveal a different world of wildlife after dark. A tree-planting ceremony at departure gives you a living marker of your visit.
The Laka Tii Spa Suite offers couples treatments with products made from local essential oils: Swedish massage, hot stone therapy, Thai massage, and wellness treatments in a jungle setting.
Dining at El Salto (Floral) and El Cosmo (Astral) is farm-to-table, with ingredients sourced from the on-site organic garden. The French-born chef brings precision to local flavours. Breakfast includes traditional gallo pinto alongside chia pudding and fresh tropical juices. Dinner is a multi-course experience that changes nightly.
The sustainability story
Origins Lodge takes sustainability seriously enough that it is woven into the design rather than bolted on as marketing. 90 percent of the construction workers for both properties were hired from the surrounding Upala community. 80 percent of the furniture was crafted on-site from naturally fallen wood. The organic garden supplies the restaurants. The design was developed in collaboration with the indigenous Maleku community, incorporating their traditional colours, crafts, and architectural principles.
Getting there
Origins Lodge is 1.5 hours from Liberia Airport (LIR) and 4 hours from San Jose International Airport (SJO). Private transfers are available from both airports. There is also an on-site helipad for guests arriving by private helicopter.
